However, the safety process after diving is not as complete and new divers may not know what not to do after diving.
1. Avoid flying after diving
Flying or riding a plane after diving is one of the things that is risky to health. Actually, the danger is not the flight, but the pressure in the aircraft cabin. Reduced air pressure when flying. If you fly after diving, this increase in altitude will cause a sudden drop in pressure. The effect is similar to rising to the surface too fast when diving.
Plus, when diving, the air you breathe through a tank consists of 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. The longer and deeper you dive, the more nitrogen is absorbed into the blood. Therefore, when diving, you must do a safety stop at a certain depth so that nitrogen can get out of your body. Even after getting out of the water, there is still nitrogen left in the body. Therefore, you must give the nitrogen time to leave the body before boarding the plane. To dive without decompression, you have to wait 12 hours before flying; for several subs, you have to wait 18 hours; while for diving that requires several decompression stops, you have to wait 24 hours before flying.
2. Zip-lining after diving can trigger decompression sickness
Zip-lining locations are usually located in mountainous areas or high areas. For the same reason as flying, avoid zip-lining for 24 after scuba diving. Zip-lining after diving can cause decompression sickness.
3. Don’t drink too much alcohol after diving
Drinking alcohol after diving is very risky for health. The reason is, consuming alcoholic beverages can interfere with the body’s process of removing nitrogen in the blood. In addition, dehydration is one of the main causes of decompression sickness, and alcohol is one of the substances that cause dehydration. Plus, one important reason why drinking alcohol is forbidden after diving is that getting drunk can mask the symptoms of decompression sickness. So, it’s good if you drink a lot before and after scuba diving, and maybe, wait a few hours before you consume alcoholic beverages.
4. Avoid mountain climbing 24 hours after diving
Mountain climbing must also be avoided 24 hours after diving. The reason is the same as some of the causes explained above. If indeed diving and scuba diving already exist in your itinerary or travel plans, do mountain climbing first, then go diving. This sequence has no risk of causing decompression sickness.
5. Massage after diving is not a good idea
Having a massage after a day of diving may sound like a brilliant idea to unwind and relieve aches. However, maybe you should avoid it because a massage after diving risks making small bubbles of nitrogen in the body merge into large bubbles. Although there are no cases of decompression sickness that occur due to massage, it helps you avoid these risks.
Getting a massage is another great vacation activity. If you dive on weekends, you will be fine to get a massage a few days later, but don’t schedule it immediately after diving. Massaging can also increase the risk of decompression.
