Last Chance to Meet the Magnificent Mola Mola in Bali!

Imagine swimming alongside a creature so peculiar yet majestic that it seems to have arrived from another world. Its massive disc-shaped body glistens in the sunlight filtering through the crystal-clear waters of Nusa Penida. This is no ordinary encounter—this is your chance to dive with the legendary ocean sunfish, the Mola Mola, before they migrate away from Bali’s waters for the season.

Final call for divers! The Mola Mola season in Bali is drawing to a close, and these gentle giants will soon depart our waters. Now is your last opportunity in 2025 to witness one of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

The Magnificent Mola Mola: Nature’s Ocean Oddity

The Mola Mola, commonly known as the ocean sunfish, is truly one of the ocean’s most unusual inhabitants. As the heaviest bony fish in the world, these gentle giants can weigh up to 2,000 kg and grow to lengths of over 3 meters. Their distinctive appearance—with their truncated, bullet-like shape and large dorsal and anal fins—makes them instantly recognizable and a bucket-list sighting for divers worldwide.

What makes the Mola Mola experience in Bali so special is the predictable seasonal nature of their visits. These magnificent creatures typically appear in the waters around Nusa Penida between July and October, when cooler currents bring them closer to the surface. As we approach the end of this window, the opportunity to see them becomes increasingly rare and precious.

Why Nusa Penida is the Perfect Mola-Mola Viewing Spot

The waters around Nusa Penida create the perfect environment for Mola Mola sightings due to:

  • Strong currents that bring up cold, nutrient-rich waters from the depths
  • Cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites from the Mola Molas’ skin
  • Crystal-clear visibility allowing for spectacular underwater photography
  • Protected marine area status ensuring these magnificent creatures can thrive

The Mola Mola typically ascend from the depths to these cleaning stations, making them accessible to divers who know exactly where and when to look.

Our Exclusive Mola Mola Diving Expeditions

Our specialized Mola Mola diving trips to Nusa Penida are designed to maximize your chances of encountering these elusive giants. Each expedition includes:

  • Comprehensive briefings on Mola Mola behavior and responsible viewing practices

Frequently Asked Questions About Mola Mola Diving

  • What diving experience level is required to join a Mola Mola expedition? To join our Mola Mola expeditions, you should be a certified Open Water diver or above with at least 15-20 logged dives. The dive sites around Nusa Penida can experience strong currents, so some experience with current diving is beneficial. However, we also offer alternative experiences for less experienced divers who wish to see Mola Mola, including special guided dives at more sheltered sites where Mola Molas occasionally appear.
  • When is the best time to see Mola Mola in Bali? The prime Mola Mola season in Bali runs from July through October, with August and September typically offering the highest frequency of sightings. As we approach the end of the season, the Mola Molas prepare to return to deeper waters, making these final trips particularly special as they represent your last chance to encounter these magnificent creatures until the next season.
  • What makes the Mola Mola (ocean sunfish) so special? The Mola Mola is truly one of the ocean’s most remarkable creatures. As the heaviest bony fish in the world, they can weigh as much as a small car! Their unique appearance—with their truncated body, massive fins, and almost perpetually surprised expression—makes them instantly recognizable. Additionally, they’re relatively rare to encounter while diving in most parts of the world, making Bali one of the few reliable destinations where divers can predictably see these ocean giants during certain seasons.

This dive was the experience of a lifetime! Sensational coral, colourful fishes everywhere and a shipwreck to explore. Ketut my dive master was exceptional and helped me so much. Bail Diving went above and beyond. Tulumben is such a cool place to be. I highly recommend this as a ‘Must Do’ dive.

Had a really great first diving experience. Chris is the BEST! Never left my side, always made sure that I’m fine and was so patient and considerate. I felt comfortable and safe all the time. My boyfriend didn’t feel good at the beginning. Chris tried to make him feel better and brought him back to the shore with me as he wanted to quit. Our driver Putu was also super kind and funny. Would definitely recommend Bali Diving to everyone. Especially for first time divers like me. Thank you!!

Amazing experience, staff are very friendly and helpful, they pointed out different locations and beaches along the way and answered any questions we had.I loved how small the group was, it didn’t feel like a big tourist thing, it felt intimate. The Snorkel instructor pointed out lots of turtles and other sea life.We were lucky enough to see 4 Manta Rays. Best experience of my life!It is a big day, so pack extra snacks for yourself, extra warm clothes and extra sunscreen. We will defiantly be doing this again.

These are the best people ever. Every single person who works here is not only kind but knowledgeable and helpful beyond belief. I couldn’t be happier with my first week in Bali and it is all thanks to Bali diving. I got my open water and advanced in the time I asked for, and made many friends in the process - I cannot say enough about how lovely the entire crew is. If you are considering which dive shop to do, go here, they will take the best care of you. I only wish I could dive with them for longer!! Also their cat is cute, bonus.

Went diving with my wife with this dive school. We went to Nusa Pelida to Manta Point, and two points up north. Our guide, Agus, was extremely professional and thoughtful of us and took good care guiding my partner in these waters as currents can be very strong. Honestly, this was among the best diving I've done in my life.We saw manta rays, giant turtles, and a ton of fish. We even had to hold on to rocks as the current got so strong that we were waving like flags hanging onto these rocks. At all times we felt safe as Agus was extremely knowledgeable of these waters and had a good eye on us.Lunch on the boat was simple and wonderful.Thank you so much guys for giving us this wonderful diving experience. Next time I'm in Bali, i'll be sure to visit you again.

Amazing!I had my diving course and did my first dive with Bali Diving. At first, I learned it in the swimming pool, then to Padang Bai, and Tulamben (USAT Liberty Shipwreck). And it's so much fun!As someone with zero diving experience, the explanation from the dive instructor, Bli Ketut Latra, was very clear and easy to understand. Whenever I felt nervous, he could calm me down and made me excited to master the diving skills. Bli Ketut was also fun to talk with during the trip. He is the best! The staff from Bali Diving are also very friendly and helpful. They have diving masks for people with glasses (my eyes are -4). And at that time I was able to use it at no extra cost! However, there was additional cost for the diving documentation.During the diving course, everything had been prepared: transportation, diving equipment, lunch. I just needed to bring a towel and sunscreen.Anyway, I highly recommend Bali Diving for anyone who wants to learn or try diving.Thank you, Bali Diving!
